They go from silly and joyful six year olds to serious and moody seven year olds. I recognized this as a teacher but with such mixed age ranges in classes, I had a hard time wondering why so many of my kids were so different. I always noticed a lot of friendship troubles starting in January each year. It wasn’t until I read the Yardsticks book that it all made sense. Seven year olds like being alone, they like having one best friend even though it changes often, but they also have some low self-esteem. </span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Next year, I plan to make time to have 3-5 students on a rotating 2 and 10 chat time. Once they turn seven, I hope to put them on my list. Set a timer for 2 minutes, and actively listen to a child talk about anything. Write down some notes and bring the next child back. Once a child has met for 10 days straight, I plan to put them on a weekly or every other week schedule to talk for 2 minutes.</span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">I used this strategy with 4 different students this year and the results were magical. This is definitely time that might be taken away from squeezing in one more enrichment lesson or sight word group but it will be worth it! As a result of satisfying their belonging and safety needs, their effort improved for academics. I guess Maslow was on to something. 😉</span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">I worked with a young man last year that we first had to start with a scaffolded approach. He had a notebook and I would ask these questions. It was tough to get him to answer at first, but soon he was telling me his life story! </span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">This is an easy strategy to try BUT you have to be consistent with meeting for 10 days straight. They really start to look forward to being heard. I have listened to them in the hall before dropping them off to special on days that I couldn’t seem to find time. I have sat down with them at lunch to listen etc. it is important to NOT miss a day. </span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><br></span><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Who is up for the challenge? </span><span style="text-align: left; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1uIUiqUjdHh9lA5iIzxuuG0lp56dkZQs6" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1uIUiqUjdHh9lA5iIzxuuG0lp56dkZQs6" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4075727928396651885.post-20811251436831347562020-05-24T18:44:00.000-07:002020-05-24T18:44:10.866-07:00Soooo.... 5 yearsGosh, I did not realize that it had been 5 years since I posted! So anyone reading this (hi mama Kathy!), I thank you!<div><br></div><div>I figured that I better give you the short version of the past five years...</div><div>-I am a mama now! I have an almost 4 year old little girl and she is my everything! That alone probably explains a bit of my absence! 🤣</div><div>-A month after my angel was born, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. 2 months after my little lady was born, my dad was diagnosed with cancer! When he told me, I thought that he was playing a sick joke. Unfortunately, it was true.</div><div>-After my maternity leave, I went back to work for 2 months. When hospice was called for my mom, I took FMLA leave to care for my mom. After my mom passed away, I returned to work for a month. </div><div>-The next year in the fall my favorite person in the world, my dad, lost his battle with cancer. I believe God has things happen for a reason. I wanted a child for a long time and I finally was blessed with one that was very needy. If it were not for my sassy young lady and having to focus on getting up every day to be her mama- I would have struggled a lot more than I have. I also am blessed with so many people like my in-laws, my husband, and my framily that have helped me heal and become more whole again. </div><div><br></div><div>Why am I telling you all of this? Well, I am an open book but also the past five years has shaped me into who I am today. I still love teaching and learning but my path has changed. Instead of focusing on filling their sponge like brains with more information, I now focus more on social and emotional learning. </div><div><br></div><div>As I embark on my 15th year of teaching first grade, I plan to implement learning activities that teach the whole child. I have dabbled in many strategies such as having a “cozy corner” (I’ll post more about that later!), using a strategy called 2 and 10, teaching guidance counselor lessons, focused on explicitly teaching how to make a friend, empathy bracelets, better choice in read alouds, and more!</div><div><br></div><div>One book that has guided me and I STRONGLY encourage you to buy is the Yardsticks<a href="Yardsticks: Child and Adolescent Development Ages 4 - 14 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1892989891/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VcYYEbAYJVZK3" title="yardsticks" style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">yardsticks</a><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"> book. There are so many times in my career that I have said, “I don’t know why they are acting this way now!” This book explains it all! What children go through cognitively, socially, and emotionally. Whenever I feel that way, I get out this book and usually have an A-HA moment. I will be using this book to help guide me into creating a framework and lessons for next year. Regardless if we are teaching remotely or in person, this should be beneficial. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">I am hoping that posting here will help keep me motivated to work but also it might inspire someone out there to try a few things. </span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;">Thanks for reading and if you are feeling super brave, feel free to post below and tell me about yourself! </span></div><div><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><br></span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%; display: inline !important;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ib1020f8IQ1nMsfIjBgv2WW8s3Y-CCPH" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1ib1020f8IQ1nMsfIjBgv2WW8s3Y-CCPH" style="max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1VMNtEai5TEZhkYmJSdQq0fIm_rlUhKrZ" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1VMNtEai5TEZhkYmJSdQq0fIm_rlUhKrZ" style="font-size: 12pt; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><img src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=13zZB6Du0Lr7bUzMKhdCWiTBGSLKw--AT" alt="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=13zZB6Du0Lr7bUzMKhdCWiTBGSLKw--AT" style="font-size: 12pt; max-height: 80%; max-width: 80%; height: auto; width: auto;"><br></span></div><div><br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4075727928396651885.post-90840612565917401942015-03-15T13:31:00.003-07:002015-03-15T13:31:56.211-07:00Google classroom ... For FIRST grade!I love 4th quarter! It is often referred as my "experimental" quarter. I have taught most skills needed and just have remediation groups, and enrichment groups. It is also the PERFECT time to try new things in the classroom. They have already learned the minimum they need to learn in first grade- so trying something new is WAY less scary. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I went to an educational tech conference 2 months ago and have been "itching" to try out a couple of things. One of those has been Google Read and Write. Google Read and Write is an extension that you can add on to chrome. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My school is HUGE with Google. We use gmail- live on Google Drive (which is the most amazing way to collaborate on things!) and even some teachers have "bit the bullet" and have "Google Classrooms." I've been to many PD sessions about Google <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Classroom a</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">nd thought- "oh- that would be great! I HATE grading all of those tests and seem to ALWAYS be grading- during lunch, recess, home, walking down the hallway." However- I know that I still read the tests to my students and I don't want to read it 3 times. We are EXTREMELY lucky and have 10 chrome books per classroom- but with 27 kids and test taking online- it wouldn't really help. So I have "brushed" the idea of ever using Google classroom under the rug. It just seemed like another PD that we attend that is not applicable to pk-1. We are in our own little world in pk-1. ...That is until I learned about Google Read and Write. (I know it is Read and Write for Google- I just love writing it my way for some reason.)</span></div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd" target="_blank"><img alt="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readwrite-for-google/inoeonmfapjbbkmdafoankkfajkcphgd" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9CVuqaIqqIH-HFc0iBpIWFdYTWyCl6bIHgF93V5YnTQXx0V-Vxdr0f0ev3CPztXqnl2O1RKsF9d2BVUKU7ppl6IXxq4jWEMorRoIynKVsrjfAwLks4C9RVlTHGNkXa6-WHLlblhoIBNo/s1600/read_write-forgoogle-logo-cmyk.gif" height="207" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
</div>
<div>
Google <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Read and Write is the answer to my constant first grade teaching complaints. </span></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">*"They can't do online research!" </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">*"I found a great article on time </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">4 kids but only half of my c</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">lass can read it!" </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">*"I can't do a real PBL because I would have to do all of the research for them! I don't have time for that!" </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">*"I can't use Google </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Classroom b</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ecause I would have to read them everything!" </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">*"I just sometimes wish I taught second grade- so in the first month of school they could come right in and read the morning message!"</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<div>
Google Read and Write is not only making my kids m<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ore independent regardless of their reading level but also making me a better person. I have WAY less complaints. I didn't say I don't complain anymore- just less. ;-)</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<strong><span style="font-size: large;">You might ask- okay what is it and how much does it cost?</span></strong></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Google Read and Write can be added to any registered Google a<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ccount on chrome in less than 5 minutes. <a href="http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=google+read+and+write+intro&qpvt=google+read+and+write+intro&FORM=VDRE#view=detail&mid=421B84F9D1B0BD5BC8FF421B84F9D1B0BD5BC8FF" target="_blank">Click here to see a 3 minute intro video.</a></span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> I am not the most techy person out there and I could easily figure it out. Within 5 minutes a green rectangle will appear to the right in your search bar (I had to sign out and back in for it to appear.)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Press the "play" button and the entire page will be highlighted and will be read to you. There are many other options like taking away pictures so it is less distracting with just the text, changing voice type, voice speed, highlighting material and even a writing tool that has word suggestions pop up similar to my iPhone does when I'm typing plus much much more! Reading items is just a small part of what this extension actually does. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now back to my Google Classroom complaint, "It isn't possible for first grade." Boy- was I ever wrong! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All of my students have my classroom website bookmarked on their Google accounts. All I did was add an easy to find clickable link to go to the Google classroom s<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ign up page. Students clicked the link. Then clicked- "join classroom" and finally hit the plus sign at the top. They entered in my class code- and were instantly enrolled into my Google classroom. (My classroom took 5 minutes to set up on my end.)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"></span> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiso2nykBBMNRaumdCmlI4uoutZUP9oMKQFejUiRdtkqJntCs4TGLV-dsFS5GyUGIMihqxi1vf1WCJnkNp7QruF0xogXd5_2lXQ8_GNUr1r98npXSfwTbiVdwhyTYtgIPvEGY142mKNpcM/s1600/google+join+class.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiso2nykBBMNRaumdCmlI4uoutZUP9oMKQFejUiRdtkqJntCs4TGLV-dsFS5GyUGIMihqxi1vf1WCJnkNp7QruF0xogXd5_2lXQ8_GNUr1r98npXSfwTbiVdwhyTYtgIPvEGY142mKNpcM/s1600/google+join+class.jpg" height="280" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<br />
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">On my teacher end I created a simple Google form with multiple c</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">hoice answers that took 2 minutes to create. I got the "link" for the form and entered it on my Google classroom page- (only taking 30 seconds.). I pressed "send" and it was sent out to my students. (Well my one "guinea pig" student.) This is similar to looking at a facebook wall. There is a feed and if someone has a link- it will appear under it. (I HIGHLY recommend watching the Google Classroom overview that is located at the bottom of this blog post.)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">With the Google Read and Write extension- all my students have to do is open up the test. Then they click on the green rectangle to bring up the tool </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">bar. Then press play to have the test read to them. They c</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">an pause it or go back and have it repeat sections. My students can now take tests independently. It doesn't have to be the same time and it even makes differentiating assessments faster. I can just send specific tests to specific kids or create a test that advances you to a more difficult question if correct. The possibilities are endless. The best part- with Flubaroo (a Google extension). It grades the assessment for you!!!!! To communicate scores to parents- we just send home a quarter sheet paper where we circle their score or skill they need to work on.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Now about the cost which is a HUGE factor! There is good news and bad news. The good news is that you get the reading feature for free to read Google </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Forms/ Docs. The bad news is that the awesome web reading and other fun features are for the pay version. You do however get the "premium" version free for a few d</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ays after signing up. You can choose if that is something worth it for you. I kinda want at least my teacher version to be premium (which you can get for free now) so kids can read their research for projects right on the computer. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">This week I am making a Google f</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">orm version of our weekly Journeys comprehension assessment and going to try it out! The Google classroom test form that we did last week worked so well! I just need to make a quarter </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">sheet pârent communication form to send home regarding the student test results. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"></span><div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Hopefully if you have been on the edge of Google </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Classroom y</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ou have been inspired to give it a try thanks to Google Read and Write! </span><br />

It is the game with vocabulary cards and blue plastic headbands. This game brings back days sitting around with my siblings and grandparents playing "Indian Poker." For the non-player- you seem like a group of fools with cards stuck on their head- however to those playing- it is a TON of fun!<br />
<br />
My students LOVE playing this game! As soon as the words, "Recess" are uttered out of my mouth- my students make a mad dash to get out the game and Legos. If you have Legos in your classroom- you have to know that you can NEVER have enough Legos. At least the Headband game gets an equal play from the stash of toys. <br />
<br />
After I reread my FAVORITE book by Dave Burgess- I was inspired to try to make this game more first grade educational friendly. I started making math cards for the game a few months ago. I tried it out with my kiddos and they did great! Well- some still try to play it charades style and give the person a hint. Either way- they are still learning and showing their knowledge of the vocabulary word and are BEGGING to play. "You know- I guess that we did have a great day today- maybe we can play a for a little bit." lol- inside I am thinking, "Yes! More math practice!"<br />

<u><br /></u>
<u><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b style="background-color: orange;">If you have never played this game- this is what it is all about:</b></span></u><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b style="background-color: orange;">1. All game players have a plastic headband (or you can make your own!)</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b style="background-color: orange;">2. They insert a card without looking at it into their headband and start a sand timer.</b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: orange;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>3. They are to ask questions to try to figure out what is inserted into their headband. The other players can only answer, "yes" or "no." Once they get an answer correct- they take it down and insert a new card- trying to get as many correct as they can before the time is up. </b></span> </span><br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">To assist students with asking questions, there are helper cards. They can flip through the cards and ask the question at the top. If their peers answer, "yes"- they know they can ask the questions below. The headband card will be the same color as the helper card. This can be used to give struggling students a hint. </span><br />

This is a new management piece incorporated this year. The Weekly Genius'. This seriously has helped with managing a large class, motivated hard work weekly, and rewarded students for excellent behavior. <br />
<br />
As you can tell it is not very high tech and it took me about 10 minutes to set up the system. I used an old graphing pocket chart, wrote out the different chunks of our day and placed it to the left. Then wrote out each child's name on a little piece of card stock. Seriously 10 minutes and it has REALLY changed the classroom environment. <br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
I learned about this first from a friend with the great idea (The same one who made the video at the bottom of this post.) I tried it out by "interviewing" students for positions and they stayed the same each week. It really didn't have the desired effect that I was going for... Then I discovered a teacher at my school who has 1 genius but changes them weekly. She said it worked well. I thought- "hey why not?"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have been using this since after winter break and it has worked so well BEYOND what I even thought would be possible. <br />
<br />
<u>How it works</u>:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Each week I "watch" students during the work chunks and determine someone that is really good at following the directions, working hard, and problem solving issues. I tell students that I am looking for a good leader to be the Genius for the following week.</li>
<li>Each Friday we make a GIANT production out of announcing the next weeks' Genius people. I really take the time to say, "This person is someone who I noticed...." This way the allure of being chosen doesn't wear off. My students get excited, cheer and congratulate their friends. </li>
<li>I secretly keep a class list that I check off each time they have been a Genius. I don't even mark what area they were- I just mark that they were a Genius. This way I know to try to find a way to choose some students that haven't been a Genius much. I still really choose students by who did well. Some students have been a Genius 8 times, while some have only been twice. I really do rely on these students to do their job so that I can do mine without interruptions.</li>
<li>My students know when to go to their Genius "job" without me telling them. Their shift is anywhere between 15-30 minutes. If students in the class have a question or need assistance- they go to the Genius. The Genius assists them. </li>
<li>The Genius is still responsible for doing their work as well.</li>
<li>Two weeks ago we added a "The Genius is on Break" sign. Under it says, "Ask 3 other friends for help. If they can't figure it out- then complete a quiet choice." The Genius can put this up if there have been too many questions or they need to finish their work.</li>
<li>As an added bonus our Genius' have their own little office. We share the office with some word study materials etc. During their shift, they sit in the office. Clipboards are hanging on the wall for their convenience. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWewdjDDylgR6T-uJHdgcFye25evOsNyVh2Nd_9tAgPT3cSOV41DIQiQT8etqdE7sNDcm0927eIQgOv7ALwTXuGWiXzvTSM7EtQCPA9swV3HJ7H9tmzQoz2WpGwihAudFfHMHfxlqlHKg/s640/blogger-image-328949377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWewdjDDylgR6T-uJHdgcFye25evOsNyVh2Nd_9tAgPT3cSOV41DIQiQT8etqdE7sNDcm0927eIQgOv7ALwTXuGWiXzvTSM7EtQCPA9swV3HJ7H9tmzQoz2WpGwihAudFfHMHfxlqlHKg/s640/blogger-image-328949377.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I HIGHLY recommend implementing this into your classroom. It really takes little preparation for the HUGE amount of positives that come from it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><span style="color: red;">Just a reminder as a PAY IT FORWARD- all (well I think at least 18) of my common core math items are free until tomorrow! My entire store is also 20 percent off as well. :)</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><span style="color: purple;">A little off topic but wanted to share a really cool video my very talented friend made for our district: <a href="http://youtu.be/7wyUo7PkATk" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a>.</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<b><span style="color: purple;"><br /></span></b></div>

<b><span style="color: purple;">Here is hoping that it inspires voters! :) LOVE my district!!!</span></b></div>

The first day I was REALLY lazy and watched movies and did laundry all day. Okay.... I was REALLY excited to do the laundry! Our AMAZING friends that are living with us as they remodel their new house bought us a BRAND NEW washer and dryer! :) Last week our old set finally decided to give out. My friend went shopping with me to pick out a new set. As I was busy filling out the warranty information- apparently my friend was secretly paying for our new machines! I feel so bad for the salesman. I went from almost yelling at her, "Why did Mr. LaSota give you the card? Wait- did you pay for that???" To sobbing and saying, "Wow- thank you- that was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me!!!!" So I REALLY didn't mind doing laundry since I was so excited to use the nice new and shiny machines. ;) Hopefully my husband doesn't catch on to how to get me to love doing chores. :)<br />
<br />
Today I figured that I better do some work! I am out on Monday for a district meeting and I realized my math plans were not that great. I figured- for me... I'd be ready to fly by the seat of my pants. However I have a substitute who has never been in the first grade classrooms before. <br />
<br />
So lo and behold- I have spent about 7 hours making some! <br />

<br />
These may not be the MOST attractive things but they walk the student through creating a graph. My goal was to make this as easy for a substitute to use as possible! The students have the graph and questions as well as the booklet out for whole group on Monday and Tuesday.<br />
<br />

These are the Wednesday and Thursday whole group items. The "try math" sheet is really a midweek assessment. The talk cards are asking students to have a discussion about a current skill and a review skill. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ilxl2zVcjaZfFolhjTQYKNANbDtRCObyB64M9SydX34gtDE0BOJeSn4aa1n44JDVsD-34-Mnow62CM64MGS7FZTaW-uFUFAHvLKPVQM24Ih4z7uFe55ekfvaT7l-NkVxr-0gm_HF_nE/s1600/creating+graphs5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9ilxl2zVcjaZfFolhjTQYKNANbDtRCObyB64M9SydX34gtDE0BOJeSn4aa1n44JDVsD-34-Mnow62CM64MGS7FZTaW-uFUFAHvLKPVQM24Ih4z7uFe55ekfvaT7l-NkVxr-0gm_HF_nE/s1600/creating+graphs5.jpg" height="168" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Students only have 2 days of Math on My Own since the other two days they are working with their whole group graph. These independent work items are differentiated. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Fozez7fJ7hv88uwsT-7fTuaDoXtbiVzUsUao3jpbOdp0jHy1txXSjRBICH0c3XmR6F1dWx8j_g2r2x5cmd3x7MzgqfnXtH83daIj3jk1RpFBEWIs5fBD81W7755Fm6rdxhPbuieJo1o/s1600/creating+graphs6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3Fozez7fJ7hv88uwsT-7fTuaDoXtbiVzUsUao3jpbOdp0jHy1txXSjRBICH0c3XmR6F1dWx8j_g2r2x5cmd3x7MzgqfnXtH83daIj3jk1RpFBEWIs5fBD81W7755Fm6rdxhPbuieJo1o/s1600/creating+graphs6.jpg" height="253" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally there are 2 Friday exit slips. One focuses more on first grade graphing skills. The second one focuses on second grade graphing skills. The students are taught more of 2nd grade graphing during whole group for the week. This is the second time we have visited graphing. They REALLY understood it the first time so I decided to teach my students more of the 2nd grade standard next week. </div>

I started with creating assessments, then moved to independent work, and finally have began working on whole group lessons that incorporate the common core math practices. <br />
<br />
My lesson plans a very simple and the whole group lesson is very simple and 10-15 minutes long. These serve as almost a "guide" and doesn't have specific skills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvH8h1sV6QqKT0lGZnNUa4B5U2ZJkLQjOS3YryhG76oULOQ9oq7iAf1lqByt-V8gIAxe5rB1qcuE_AdVUthQsEVqMsycwverqs8IYYA4ZkpA5cwGCNg8p157gAM1Wb_kBDnstsYX2MUEo/s1600/math+try+sheet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5LHkNdk7Lm99ZM1i2KAIMRrKJ4gW1yCr9TNwgKH8xBckFtMD5IYXG1Kus_x02Av5hEJw3E99tYfX4yJODE3toI2zGum6gUnbl1GdbLIlMbrtARajU06H_ZwtVQa7KzU8LXC4UCQtPAFg/s1600/math+lesson+plan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5LHkNdk7Lm99ZM1i2KAIMRrKJ4gW1yCr9TNwgKH8xBckFtMD5IYXG1Kus_x02Av5hEJw3E99tYfX4yJODE3toI2zGum6gUnbl1GdbLIlMbrtARajU06H_ZwtVQa7KzU8LXC4UCQtPAFg/s1600/math+lesson+plan.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<br />
On the first day of the week, I try to incorporate a sort or some other activity to try to get students to figure out what we will be learning about this week. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ40p2cFjrVqV7Ix32dZNr9ijdeajFv8DHPFTvEO6s92iTh24q8Lb604XL93zpYQpWY-DzBID_ZSjgeTisG2d9sVArPi1YhA4tRiRxwQKZbwxHhn4YSuXzYP7ZaUv7OdIaJB0WLlhGmUk/s1600/math+sort.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ40p2cFjrVqV7Ix32dZNr9ijdeajFv8DHPFTvEO6s92iTh24q8Lb604XL93zpYQpWY-DzBID_ZSjgeTisG2d9sVArPi1YhA4tRiRxwQKZbwxHhn4YSuXzYP7ZaUv7OdIaJB0WLlhGmUk/s1600/math+sort.jpg" height="142" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
For easy to use whole group lessons- (especially if I have a substitute)- for most units I have a booklet for whole group. Students also use hands on manipulatives as well. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These booklets seem to make it easier for parents to understand that there are different ways to solve the type of problem. I was just at a meeting last week where the facilitator put it rather clearly- "The social media articles about common core math seems to be that the teacher/ homework is focusing too much on the strategy rather than the standard." <br />
******************************************************************************<br />
On Wednesday each week we have a midpoint assessment. I LOVE these! It was something new that I tried this year- and they have worked GREAT! <br />
<br />
It has a problem at the top highlighting this current week's skill. The students try to answer it in the first box. Then they get in line to show me. If it is correct I draw a smiley face on it- they put it in their mailbox and get to play math review games until rotations start. If they don't have it correct the first time- I quickly give them a hint and they have to go back and try to figure it out in the second box. Finally, if they don't "get it" after 2 tries either I or a partner will sit down and help them figure it out. This has really helped to "weed out" those students who need some extra support for the skill of the week. It also is great communication to the parents since they can see how many tries it took them to get the problem correct. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvH8h1sV6QqKT0lGZnNUa4B5U2ZJkLQjOS3YryhG76oULOQ9oq7iAf1lqByt-V8gIAxe5rB1qcuE_AdVUthQsEVqMsycwverqs8IYYA4ZkpA5cwGCNg8p157gAM1Wb_kBDnstsYX2MUEo/s1600/math+try+sheet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvH8h1sV6QqKT0lGZnNUa4B5U2ZJkLQjOS3YryhG76oULOQ9oq7iAf1lqByt-V8gIAxe5rB1qcuE_AdVUthQsEVqMsycwverqs8IYYA4ZkpA5cwGCNg8p157gAM1Wb_kBDnstsYX2MUEo/s1600/math+try+sheet.jpg" height="400" width="311" /></a></div>
*****************************************************************************<br />
On Thursdays we have "math talk." We have one card that focus' on the skill of the week and a second card which reviews a skill we have already learned. Students work in their table groups. I place the first card face down in the middle of the tables and students have their dry erase materials out and ready. I tell them to turn it over- I read it and they start working. Students are instructed to turn over and hide their answer when they are finished. When students notify me that they are finished- I tell them to "talk." Students then use our discussion rules and share their answers one at a time with also how they figured it out. This is repeated with the second card.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

******************************************************************************<br />
Finally on Fridays we have a short exit ticket to assess student mastery of the skill. Students who didn't master the skill are placed in my "second rotation" group for the following week so we can work on the skill further. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis87Ie-0-ZZGF0UNlXIhpQ0RpLZJDuXWIRUHgaOh130jwKiRiMImE637FlgN5EBN6bGQ64b-y5Q7kbiCZGJThyc9cKCX1KSIpg0aPPBXm-S7oAmXHimXM_xgL2rhH3XRWrd2yDP4KnEME/s1600/math+exit+slip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis87Ie-0-ZZGF0UNlXIhpQ0RpLZJDuXWIRUHgaOh130jwKiRiMImE637FlgN5EBN6bGQ64b-y5Q7kbiCZGJThyc9cKCX1KSIpg0aPPBXm-S7oAmXHimXM_xgL2rhH3XRWrd2yDP4KnEME/s1600/math+exit+slip.jpg" height="205" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
********************************************************************************<br />
Daily students are to choose which math group they need to follow for the day. Since I have a large class- I DO NOT meet with the yellow students and instead I meet with remediation students. However during independent work the students in the yellow group are allowed to work with a peer during their rotations. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Which-Math-Group-Student-guided-math-choice-poster-1696448" target="_blank">Click here to download this poster for free.</a><br />

<br />
In each unit I also have included differentiated math on my own worksheets. These all work on the same skill but have different supports built in for students. The "green group" worksheets often just have larger numbers to figure out. <br />

The Daily Must-Do consists of their differentiated Math on My Own papers and also Number of the Day work. Just Number of the Day covers 4 different skills that we need to review in first grade.<br />
<br />
Students are expected during their Weekly Work/ Math Workshop rotation to finish the Math on My Own worksheet and Number of the day each day. When they finish they are to get the Weekly Work items completed. <br />
<br />
<u><strong>Here is what their rotation charts look like:</strong></u><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">This weekly center practices math facts and graphing skills. All of the students filled out a paper in advance. I pick one weekly to be the "mystery person." Students have to solve the math facts to find clues about the mystery person. When they have their clues- they have to graph in their guess of who it is from one of the five students written on the graph. On Fridays we ask graphing questions like, "How many more people..."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am a HUGE HGTV fan. Lately they have been playing marathons of Love it or List it. If you have ever watched it- you know that they are SUPER dramatic at the end about if they are going to love their current house or list it. I do the same thing on Friday. "Will the mystery person please reveal themselves?" It is hilarious to see their reactions when you feed a bit into first grade drama. :)</div>

I guess it is tough to carve out 2-3 hours to write a blog post! However with another snow day today- I thought that I would take the time to share some things that are going on in our classroom.<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="background-color: white;">SHAMELESS PLUG- If you are on <span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">Twitter</span>- please follow me! I actually tweet on average 2 times a week about things we are doing in the classroom. It takes literally 30 seconds to upload a photo and caption versus 3 hours for a blog post. I LOVE reading blogs and blogging however it is tough to find the time! This is me -----> @lasotadanielle</span></strong><br />
<br />
********************************************************************************<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="color: red;">Now down to business....</span></h3>
<br />
<strong><u><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">WHY?</span></u></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I have LOVED how I manage guided math in my room the past few years. However this year I have needed to switch things around mid year because:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">-my class is <strong><span style="font-size: x-large;">HUGE at 27 students</span></strong> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(Sorry for whining for those of you that have somehow managed 30 plus students every year!)</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">-I have some SUPER intelligent students that need more.</span><br />
<br />
<strong><u>How is it new?</u></strong><br />
You can download my "old" guided math charts and management for<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Guided-Math-Rotation-Charts-818614" target="_blank"> FREE here</a> on TPT. I still love it- it just doesn't work with this LARGE class as well.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here are our NEW rotation charts:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8vLzbUIAVcD2nJqZIefWy9eK7k2tTYinJgG20HQg70flkHrsLZa59PmOgo9RKdrYAWQfL38nvgBeAU2KSDN8jeDvynEKNF05Eh2gc0KfLj5AgGR6UOSnWRmQMpyg5-NXfIuzRM99k6Is/s1600/new+math+rotation+charts.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8vLzbUIAVcD2nJqZIefWy9eK7k2tTYinJgG20HQg70flkHrsLZa59PmOgo9RKdrYAWQfL38nvgBeAU2KSDN8jeDvynEKNF05Eh2gc0KfLj5AgGR6UOSnWRmQMpyg5-NXfIuzRM99k6Is/s1600/new+math+rotation+charts.png" height="162" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">You might notice that the yellow group does not have a "math with teacher." Part of having a larger class means even LARGER small groups! Also less time to one-on-one conference with students therefore more learning gaps. :( During second rotation I pull skill groups. The other two rotations I teach the green (above) group enrichment of the current week's lesson. The red group (below) receives a simplified version of this week's whole group lesson. Technically the whole group lesson should meet the needs of the "yellow group." Students are allowed to choose each day which group to join during rotations. We have a very kind and encouraging classroom climate so students are VERY honest in choosing their groups. I 99 percent agree with their group choices daily.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We are fortunate enough to have an intervention specialist and a math tutor for 40 minutes to support all 3 first grade classrooms during the first and second rotations. Since first and second grade have large class sizes this year they hired a tutor just to support our 6 classes- we have her for all 3 math rotations. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">*If you would be a low-low student- first rotation you have a group with our intervention specialist who reviews skills and touches on the whole group lesson of the week. Second rotation you would be pulled by myself or the tutors for a skill remediation. (We have a great google doc to communicate and keep track of students.) Third rotation you would be having a small group with me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">*If you are a low student- you would be on chrome books first rotation. Second rotation you would most likely be pulled out for a skill remediation. Third rotation you would have small group with me.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">*If you are an average student- you would work on your workshop work first rotation. Second rotation you would be on chrome books or a skill remediation. Third rotation you could work with a partner to finish any of your work. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">*If you are an above average student- you would have a group with me for first rotation. You would complete math work second rotation. During third rotation you would be on chrome books. Some REALLY above average students work with the tutor on more enrichment items.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><u><strong>How are the rotation signs organized?</strong></u></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">(This is the only picture I have of the new signs here at home and it is SUPER messy! SORRY!)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">SO MESSY!! I took this picture to remind myself to change the fabric and clean this area up! </span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;">One of my students moves the recycling bin there for some unknown reason everyday. lol. You need to pick your battles.</span> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">The rotation signs are hanging on the board with the "Math on My Own" papers hanging under the appropriate sign.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;"><strong><u>How I make sure students know what to do:</u></strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I use a playlist all day to make sure that we stay on schedule. Here are screen shots of some of the math slides that play:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTMvp2VL3jV3G_vVh45QYTmziNcaFq3E_6iELZ9sveysKvzfRt2HnjCnhHaR13nEkQCgILxIBc7K4hxGy6oIt9yJKWu5RZt2IkFW4SRPoWjZdQc4yXBxr1mlkvzv_FkOAIB7bDv-vE_to/s1600/math+transition+preview.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTMvp2VL3jV3G_vVh45QYTmziNcaFq3E_6iELZ9sveysKvzfRt2HnjCnhHaR13nEkQCgILxIBc7K4hxGy6oIt9yJKWu5RZt2IkFW4SRPoWjZdQc4yXBxr1mlkvzv_FkOAIB7bDv-vE_to/s1600/math+transition+preview.jpg" height="448" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">When it is time to transition for groups this pops up along with the "I Like to Move it-Move it song.)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This plays for the remaining 19 minutes with instrumental versions of popular music. This way if a student enters from using the restroom or late from another teacher- they can easily tell what rotation we are on. They also have a reminder of what they should be doing with the picture clues.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong><u>How do I manage student data?:</u></strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;">-For remediation skill groups: We have a shared google doc between all 3 support staff and the first grade teachers. We have a table with the skills we have taught down the left. The next column is blank until a teacher writes their name and date in the slot claiming that "group". The third column has color coded student names from all 3 classrooms. Once the teacher feels that a student in her group has mastered that skill- <strike>we strike through</strike> their name. We move on and choose new groups without having to meet with each other. It is really easy to just communicate on the shared google form. We add student names to this form each week after we grade their weekly exit slip.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: large;">-In small groups I use a Guided math format paper for easy recording of how students did in their group with me.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">-We keep all differentiated worksheets and materials needed in a HUGE binder. As we developed lessons last year- we made sure to take the time to keep and organize them. It makes it easy for parent volunteers to copy for all 3 classrooms. This seriously saves HOURS each week.</span><br />
<br />
<strong><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">I just tried to briefly touch on these items. Please let me know if you have any questions and I would LOVE to go more into detail on any of the items mentioned. :)</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<strong><span style="color: red;">I hope to try my best to write a post about our new workshop paper, what we do on chrome books, our new whole group common core friendly lessons, our new weekly activities, our math projects and more WITHIN the next 30 days! Perhaps I should give myself longer... maybe 3 months? ;)</span></strong><br />

I have started slow and have been gradually been adding more and more techniques to my bag of tricks.<div><br></div><div>If you read my posts- you probably can tell that I am NOT a program teacher. I use data and many different resources depending on what my kiddos need.</div><div><br></div><div>I however use whole brain teaching probably 95% of it just like it was written. It has worked with so many different classes. It truely is amazing! </div><div><br></div><div>We had a professional development day today where staff members were presenting on different topics. My principal asked me to present and I chose WBT. I tried to make it a "drop in" session and made QR codes with video links but what do you know- the wifi wasn't working well where I was! So I quickly finished a presentation and thought that I'd share it with you! (Since I am s<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">ending it to my staff.)</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHqp0Vk-vZa2LaNE5XJMq6-PEm1Ej4A3PlN7EiNgXImY0l5tbHrdsYb6j-2ZoyJ8HDfqPXNqo3IiKAKWNCZYsm1ZuFms5fWSckXTqer1blHiddv8tlA5Ns_p6Ish_9vBBO_23EaStxcU/s640/blogger-image--1601953622.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHqp0Vk-vZa2LaNE5XJMq6-PEm1Ej4A3PlN7EiNgXImY0l5tbHrdsYb6j-2ZoyJ8HDfqPXNqo3IiKAKWNCZYsm1ZuFms5fWSckXTqer1blHiddv8tlA5Ns_p6Ish_9vBBO_23EaStxcU/s640/blogger-image--1601953622.jpg"></a></div><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/xf8uwbwn7nipr8f/WholeBrainTeachingpresentation.pdf?dl=0">https://www.dropbox.com/s/xf8uwbwn7nipr8f/WholeBrainTeachingpresentation.pdf?dl=0</a></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27dbZk8UbtCe_eD_4m0h0fU_ToriNyYQ243pSMiZbzAxCiNdtwTWfVA_zZCpcgoQ0-fHT_SHWgMoXU_YjN3X2ky6RcN_j6Nt1oXZckvN7EOEQWQVuHQF-yHof1gZZXdQDs3Z5T6aibyE/s640/blogger-image-396359273.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg27dbZk8UbtCe_eD_4m0h0fU_ToriNyYQ243pSMiZbzAxCiNdtwTWfVA_zZCpcgoQ0-fHT_SHWgMoXU_YjN3X2ky6RcN_j6Nt1oXZckvN7EOEQWQVuHQF-yHof1gZZXdQDs3Z5T6aibyE/s640/blogger-image-396359273.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAd8PZoYqhCUrPHUSAuUOv-iCKrcx3vccUw-_OAJ3uajMHZqRhnc86HRSTJE3VI0rsdDGE3I3f98YOIXaz7PNA0LXwBgHjEwbsVsz_b50RNBFxy2noe6-wsSNyEulB2lvy3DD1YsMLifQ/s640/blogger-image--1103630858.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAd8PZoYqhCUrPHUSAuUOv-iCKrcx3vccUw-_OAJ3uajMHZqRhnc86HRSTJE3VI0rsdDGE3I3f98YOIXaz7PNA0LXwBgHjEwbsVsz_b50RNBFxy2noe6-wsSNyEulB2lvy3DD1YsMLifQ/s640/blogger-image--1103630858.jpg"></a></div><br></div>*sorry for the phone screen shots!*</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihshTnsNEZfa-MlMGs1Jje5LrvhM_4fKS6WlhQWhzJDSgZCBka_w_7WdCutAuIV5vI6thM9ljBvbUwF7xvxaW3-MVbEa_Qnkaj4_TXZXvJRJqW1g8ey2W4tpAR5hZI7eUyq2DyVseBPJE/s640/blogger-image--1866920618.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihshTnsNEZfa-MlMGs1Jje5LrvhM_4fKS6WlhQWhzJDSgZCBka_w_7WdCutAuIV5vI6thM9ljBvbUwF7xvxaW3-MVbEa_Qnkaj4_TXZXvJRJqW1g8ey2W4tpAR5hZI7eUyq2DyVseBPJE/s640/blogger-image--1866920618.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKT8gS7hdqB1rnayGdR_dW4vgF6u91Dr0BF3hN5SlXtK8b2mxHhoQEf-wjaKOUARm32z5DHh-y7TVN57u2Mcv23SxUNA_byqEtTkb6ydeudbcJlSjjQ_5wgnLb9YeQzfCdaAQgtrArKk4/s640/blogger-image--993075549.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKT8gS7hdqB1rnayGdR_dW4vgF6u91Dr0BF3hN5SlXtK8b2mxHhoQEf-wjaKOUARm32z5DHh-y7TVN57u2Mcv23SxUNA_byqEtTkb6ydeudbcJlSjjQ_5wgnLb9YeQzfCdaAQgtrArKk4/s640/blogger-image--993075549.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSL1ien7UzLHsbwwkLHcL4OLpKYHffgTskwH-UWaKqruTg79jXbyrmWS4fYSnoDUjDe8SdyxV5hGlXE8j4ZpmoiXLAzlz9reYqhWhO3kg2Zn0mG-LzTz_5_yUNwcrlQHkQixdXQF2YqQ/s640/blogger-image--976509987.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguSL1ien7UzLHsbwwkLHcL4OLpKYHffgTskwH-UWaKqruTg79jXbyrmWS4fYSnoDUjDe8SdyxV5hGlXE8j4ZpmoiXLAzlz9reYqhWhO3kg2Zn0mG-LzTz_5_yUNwcrlQHkQixdXQF2YqQ/s640/blogger-image--976509987.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I also have made new WBT posters including items needed for the Super Improver Board and posted them on TPT. It has always been just a thought... until this year!<div><br></div><div>When you have multiple copies of forms or papers that the students use- to put a master copy in a page protector at the bottom of the drawer. TLAP!My lesson plans are finished. I have met my new kiddos and their families. Morning work is on their table and sight word table names are up. We are ready to go... Kinda.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilHd-UGmuZRhXTIdNfsIYV5lu8CebyvGvJNmzpYOyJw1RhJFHVCi2Z2L4SGu4rLdSpotbP6OBc6cy6Gs1egyve1pQwcM0voWVKOnTIqVmbrpvkDX0UeuVlBJkzF_jJO3t7kDx9hAkOBlQ/s640/blogger-image--354519242.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilHd-UGmuZRhXTIdNfsIYV5lu8CebyvGvJNmzpYOyJw1RhJFHVCi2Z2L4SGu4rLdSpotbP6OBc6cy6Gs1egyve1pQwcM0voWVKOnTIqVmbrpvkDX0UeuVlBJkzF_jJO3t7kDx9hAkOBlQ/s640/blogger-image--354519242.jpg"></a></div><br><div>I know that I talk about Dave Burgess and Teach Like a Pirate CONSTANTLY but I just cannot help it- he is a fantastic motivator. On my beginning of the year staff goal sheet- I honestly wrote- "Implement more engaging strategies like Dave Burgess." </div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitEKYdoArlZInWTGCcsydxZFKnaWbl7v8rHKQHBeYPaXz4NstWJGroMtJGT6R0gVofywaZRy5NkWAGK-JLY8RVABrovmngdFeaxFUHbfxskjHhYuBVYiVzjNsUVriVRdUIOhgM90BXsn8/s640/blogger-image-975582936.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitEKYdoArlZInWTGCcsydxZFKnaWbl7v8rHKQHBeYPaXz4NstWJGroMtJGT6R0gVofywaZRy5NkWAGK-JLY8RVABrovmngdFeaxFUHbfxskjHhYuBVYiVzjNsUVriVRdUIOhgM90BXsn8/s640/blogger-image-975582936.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>One section of his book is titled- "The First 3 Days of School." It is a short read but it describes some of the amazing techniques that he does. He is a high school history teacher so some of these activities scare me since my kiddos don't even know how to ask to use the restroom yet! However they are important in developing rapport and classroom environment during the first few days. I need to not only teach rules/ routines but also capture and peak their interest so that cannot wait to come back to school the next day. </div><div><br></div><div>I have been participating in the Monday evening #tlap twitter chats. If you are on twitter- I highly recommend it- even if you are not brave enough to participate- you can still read tweets. :-). I have learned a lot! </div><div><br></div><div>On there I was pumped up to leave my normal "boring" first week routines to rest and "jazz" it up a bit. I wish my firsties could read more day 1 so I could have "shocking" messages... Oh well! I'm still proud of them- just have to make it more visual! Here are some ideas:</div><div><br></div><div>- Day 1 teach kiddos to shake hands. Tell them it is just the first part of a "secret" handshake. They have to come back the next day to learn the next part. </div><div>- Since we take a lot of assessments- each time we will listen to "eye of the tiger" and do dramatic stretches or</div><div>do koo-koo kangaroo etc. before the assessment time. I will tell them that we are "working out/ stretching their brain."</div><div>-When teaching bathroom and hallway rules- we will of course motivate them by a friendly competition. Boys vs girls</div><div>Or by color of hair etc. Winners are</div><div>going to get some ridiculous yarn necklace with a toilet or Solo cup toilet</div><div>trophy etc. For the hallway- <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">These trophies will be a mouse or something for "quiet as a mouse." These trophies </span></div><div>will travel back and forth all day. "Who will it be this time?" </div><div>- During independent time (Ha! August first graders and the word "independent" never go in the same sentence!) I plan to have subject appropriate music playing. </div><div>-I love Whole Brain Teaching! I plan to even jazz this up a bit. Instead of "class", "yes!" I plan on using a different and more catchy phrase. Perhaps "macaroni and cheese." "Everybody freeze!" Or you can't go wrong with- "STOP!" "Collaborate and listen."</div><div>-Also when I teach the "scoreboard" the smiley faces will be replaced with something else- I'm just not sure what it will be yet! </div><div>-I also love the idea of giving groups of tables a mini tube of toothpaste. Have them squeeze it out- then tell them to put it back in. This leads to a discussion that once you say a hurtful thing that it is tough to take it back. </div><div><br></div><div>Hopefully some of you are ready to "dive in" and add more real life and engagement like me this year! I hope to "see" you on the #tlap twitter charts on Monday evenings! </div><div><br></div><div>I better go and attempt to get some</div><div>shut eye... No more mid- afternoon naps</div><div>until June again! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4075727928396651885.post-65211267321995591432014-08-11T17:58:00.002-07:002014-08-11T17:59:23.617-07:00First Week of First Grade Plans<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="background-color: blue;">I ALWAYS forget what I do the first week of school! It<span id="goog_1356910296"></span></span></span></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><span id="goog_1356910297"></span><span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> is the one time of year that I actually need fairly detailed plans. If you are someone that forgets over the 6-8 weeks just like I do- feel free to download my plans (specific to me) for free to get some ideas. I am quite sure that I have forgot some really important items. :)</span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I also have included a 1st and 2nd week "checklist" of things that you need to remember to do. Knowing me- after starting school on Wednesday- I will be adding to that list each day. That way I WILL remember next year! :)</span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Meet and Greet is tomorrow so I am sure I will go back to having radio silence for a couple of weeks. You know how the beginning of the school year is.. 1. You lose your voice 2. You go to get at 6 PM! (That is early for me when I typically go to bed between 2-3 AM.)</span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> </span><br>
<span style="background-color: blue; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Enjoy getting to know your new classes. I know that I cannot wait! :)</span><br>

When 27 pairs of eyeballs are staring up at you, you hear "teacher, teacher!"as they tug on your arm, some have school supplies and others brought it the night before, some can stay in their seat, others pretend to be airplanes flying around the room.<br>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
I LOVE teaching first grade. However that first hour- is enough to give me nightmares! I try to be proactive. We have meet and greet and each parent receives this paper:</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwBrd_ymXH9p-BYATmJvf08UkBUzUMdJns1oRUjLWg_j9iUWX95Kc8yobUiE-zdXE7Rh71i75JxUhEWe4wFkb9z_divcRHLPDV3yOTRvMI-XALqa67_9PIcprbRTVwVJ94eQdONkB9UCs/s1600/meet+and+greet+form.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwBrd_ymXH9p-BYATmJvf08UkBUzUMdJns1oRUjLWg_j9iUWX95Kc8yobUiE-zdXE7Rh71i75JxUhEWe4wFkb9z_divcRHLPDV3yOTRvMI-XALqa67_9PIcprbRTVwVJ94eQdONkB9UCs/s1600/meet+and+greet+form.jpg" height="400" width="310"></a></div>
</div>
<div>
It helps a lot with students finding things around the room. I have used a cute poem in the past but I've noticed parents are in a hurry to get to the other classrooms so I made it simple and to the point!</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
I also have assortments of baskets of books on each table, supplies in table baskets and a very simple coloring sheet on the table for the first day of school. However, I still get those first day "sweats!"</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
This year we have enlisted the help of our in house preschool teachers. They are going to hand small groups of our students to us (it is a giant school and a ton of ways to get to school) and we will get to walk those 3-5 students through hanging up their items, lunch count and finding their seat. These amazing teachers have even offered to stay for the first hour to make sure things go smoothly. If that wasn't enough- show up to help us for dismissal!!! </div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
So- to thank each of them- I am giving them Riesen, Hugs, and Lifesaver candy with this tag:<br>

Warning- mushy post!I have always considered myself a "people lover." I love meeting, talking to, and being around people. Just recently I have befriended an older lady which I tend to run into on the weekends. One day she turned to me and said- "Danielle- do you know why I like you?" I was a little on edge to hear her answer because she is one of those friends that you never know what is going to come out of her mouth! I asked why. She said- "You don't judge and talk to everyone and treat everyone equally regardless of community stature, race, age etc." She then told a story about how recently some people were being nasty to her at a birthday party telling her she shouldn't have been there because she wasn't in the same social class. It made me sad to hear it! It made me realize that I need to keep doing what I am doing to model friendliness to my little first grade students. I also thought that it was BY FAR the nicest compliment that I have ever received! Hopefully I can keep living up to how she views me. :-). I tricked another one into thinking I'm nice! :-)<div><br></div><div>This is a bit of a mushy post because I wanted to highlight some of the amazing people in my life. </div><div><br></div><div>First up- my hubby. This weekend will be our 6th wedding anniversary! I cannot believe it has been that long! He is amazing. He like most men is a "fixer." He can fix pipes, computer problems, and dinner. He however can also can weld anything including fancy art sculptures and fix a car. He is a VERY busy man with a ton of business ventures but still takes the time to help this anxious lady out! He just spent 8 hours in my classroom putting together shelves, hanging things, stuffing folders etc. I am very blessed to have him in my life. </div><div><br></div><div>Here is a peak of some things he did (I forgot to take a lot of pictures!)</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifY4BPRjkzj2XjzCK5011A8Yczl8AlSRcZxRWG5kkR7EiDcjafYGvWn5z39UrnrESXe_0W87CDJxGEyOc0fJT4JgoQl2YqrvueH2NRvZJNPnxAtkOTR2RH3P_zP6kMcOBRkMyoHrnzno0/s640/blogger-image--1689532745.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifY4BPRjkzj2XjzCK5011A8Yczl8AlSRcZxRWG5kkR7EiDcjafYGvWn5z39UrnrESXe_0W87CDJxGEyOc0fJT4JgoQl2YqrvueH2NRvZJNPnxAtkOTR2RH3P_zP6kMcOBRkMyoHrnzno0/s640/blogger-image--1689532745.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqOGdqs2ctOeijaq_dma6s4WZ_AN_hp8PU75W4LqvSj1e6tZdzaTdcTm3b_Pa-ZZzuVcsKqju7PXjODqL3P2UNmLZtaDi38iQUW9cdNXWNafRiwWosOGIW97C6_xo0Gm-0ZDaZrNBGQ3A/s640/blogger-image--971533946.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqOGdqs2ctOeijaq_dma6s4WZ_AN_hp8PU75W4LqvSj1e6tZdzaTdcTm3b_Pa-ZZzuVcsKqju7PXjODqL3P2UNmLZtaDi38iQUW9cdNXWNafRiwWosOGIW97C6_xo0Gm-0ZDaZrNBGQ3A/s640/blogger-image--971533946.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeu10wbJv1kx56wtp6EBZvc_Vsym2pfx62ZtakZytOjWF8jS2KPVFf2sBNbbJicWNu5VC501aeHlJL51jzKmWr4SRSSLwTAE9tIDc5sjfARSQsW11qcbXr_AJTreZBZBM3PSsQ8ql4Q-A/s640/blogger-image-1012851209.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeu10wbJv1kx56wtp6EBZvc_Vsym2pfx62ZtakZytOjWF8jS2KPVFf2sBNbbJicWNu5VC501aeHlJL51jzKmWr4SRSSLwTAE9tIDc5sjfARSQsW11qcbXr_AJTreZBZBM3PSsQ8ql4Q-A/s640/blogger-image-1012851209.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>He worked on 3 more walls of my</div><div>classroom but I forgot to take those pictures!</div><div><br></div><div>Up next are my teammates- one is returning from last year and another is new to the district. I cannot tell you how much I rely on them both! For personal advice, for thumb tacks, for sharing resources ,or copying duties. I am very lucky to have them! I still meet with my teammates from my former district and we started a Pinterest sharing session dates. We gab, eat, and give each other Pinterest classroom things like "brag tags" that we made for each other. I LOVE my teacher friends. No one quite understands a teacher like a teacher! </div><div>This is a lovely little treat that was made for me this year:</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT7YnSg9g79FzgPlsZksmWzPvvx8qwDPZSgUUh_TzXIqzqnKk77CJEWw3VNaUMhCkYr5yY7VWnJC9UP_uUZusRT4MqHk9Iy8_tS2IardsftkaCUEb-4KRvNdd7TSrgLRPpJIQNt68i6ug/s640/blogger-image-113922163.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT7YnSg9g79FzgPlsZksmWzPvvx8qwDPZSgUUh_TzXIqzqnKk77CJEWw3VNaUMhCkYr5yY7VWnJC9UP_uUZusRT4MqHk9Iy8_tS2IardsftkaCUEb-4KRvNdd7TSrgLRPpJIQNt68i6ug/s640/blogger-image-113922163.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Then there are amazing friends that I don't get to see that often but we keep up by random text messages. These are friends that are great even if you don't see each other much. It might be once a year but no one ever gets upset. I have happy hours and breakfasts planned with these friends because with our busy lives it is tough to stay in touch. I am not morning person so those 6 am Friday breakfast meetings are a killer but TOTALLY worth it! </div><div><br></div><div>Recently one of my super creative friends painted these inspirational quotes me for and my hubby hung them! I am</div><div>NOT artsy. So I am so thankful for her taking the time in AUGUST when she is a teacher herself to make them for me. :-)</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib_41rYYZFnD5XgxTTI4xSdITsoWtqE8v9XnB9RUWorutvmgvFcsp7OTLOaFtLRZAnn7PBG4hMuuCvlAYH2bcf2IiBDCUK-rpnTKg41uGPQ4365SOs8Ac2AAty3vZeNY0DrPocRjpV1ew/s640/blogger-image-1809393123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib_41rYYZFnD5XgxTTI4xSdITsoWtqE8v9XnB9RUWorutvmgvFcsp7OTLOaFtLRZAnn7PBG4hMuuCvlAYH2bcf2IiBDCUK-rpnTKg41uGPQ4365SOs8Ac2AAty3vZeNY0DrPocRjpV1ew/s640/blogger-image-1809393123.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7hiVGpwOCAinsX0d0GMx09bc-IiAmTXzAAgodOiI1iDmEmCsMSGh3mzNSfdZMdtY13KivCNP4Uf-AMneF6FgtLUj2FMl-zaExDiNzr52fzCYRHBYINnr53WRfXAdCSdUdnJXm9c6iL9g/s640/blogger-image--239651453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7hiVGpwOCAinsX0d0GMx09bc-IiAmTXzAAgodOiI1iDmEmCsMSGh3mzNSfdZMdtY13KivCNP4Uf-AMneF6FgtLUj2FMl-zaExDiNzr52fzCYRHBYINnr53WRfXAdCSdUdnJXm9c6iL9g/s640/blogger-image--239651453.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJeFmbVn97qo2z39z3pIE_CxzxSWKdCFZah4JMXhPh9Gqr8ZjCCQEB_Xlm745qvSQlWzzTFUPcMZejxyEtzcY5N4rQnwEQS5ggQVoBzj6dZiEYDOJiOdDcCdw3bZvtE0kqgSlFpRuBTpg/s640/blogger-image-314491960.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJeFmbVn97qo2z39z3pIE_CxzxSWKdCFZah4JMXhPh9Gqr8ZjCCQEB_Xlm745qvSQlWzzTFUPcMZejxyEtzcY5N4rQnwEQS5ggQVoBzj6dZiEYDOJiOdDcCdw3bZvtE0kqgSlFpRuBTpg/s640/blogger-image-314491960.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9T83QXxHF-nb_2AgTlBEnpWFpka898AOOmTwawOmaN9K8VTvIru8jCF4Q1gTDH49I11Z_EbHXuboe7RXT2rPtDDf1qPzda_XYsbicc3WWykhV9EkrYFzlPaKFVnjm7OIV6vpMAMVl8GM/s640/blogger-image--141110606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9T83QXxHF-nb_2AgTlBEnpWFpka898AOOmTwawOmaN9K8VTvIru8jCF4Q1gTDH49I11Z_EbHXuboe7RXT2rPtDDf1qPzda_XYsbicc3WWykhV9EkrYFzlPaKFVnjm7OIV6vpMAMVl8GM/s640/blogger-image--141110606.jpg"></a></div>On the proud wall are "I met my</div><div>Goal today! Ask me about it!" badges. This is a stolen idea from my principal. She gives out jeans stickers that say- "I'm dressed casual today because..." Love that idea!</div><div><br></div><div>I cannot post about friends and leave out Rob and my very best friends. They are amazing people. The type like my friend from the beginning mentioned- "don't judge." They are the definition of true friendship. My best friend is super intelligent (come on she is a scientist!) and fun. We spend every weekend together. However they still cut out my lamination, hot glue thumb tacks to clothes pins and help me when things just get stressful. They are the type of people that I won't ever have to ask for help- they know when I am overwhelmed and just "do things" to help. Rob and I are very lucky to have met such selfless and amazing friends. We have only known them for 3 years- but it is definitely a friendship that will last a lifetime. </div><div><br></div><div>And... one more! I am very lucky to have 4 siblings! Unfortunately I only see some</div><div>of them every couple of years due to living across the country from each other. But I grateful for those that live close to me and their significant others, my in-laws (who are DREAM in-laws), my dad, aunts and uncles. :-). They are there for hanging out, playing games (my guilty pleasure), helping me and giving advice. :-).</div><div><br></div><div>Now you might ask (if you made it this far) why I took the time to post this. </div><div>I had a tough year last year (perhaps you noticed a lack in posting!). However I am bound and determined to keep my positive attitude and just focus on the amazing things in my life. I encourage you to do the same. It is too easy to dwell on "poor me." I had a friend share a quote with me last year that I love- "Don't think less of yourself. Just think of yourself less." So I am determined to do just that and remember and think of others and the amazing things in my life.</div><div>It is easy to do because I am surrounded by amazing people which makes me <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">a very lucky girl! </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Thanks for reading! :-). </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">And... Wrote this on my phone again. You know what that means. Super sorry! </span></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4075727928396651885.post-3477456992192899232014-08-04T19:18:00.001-07:002014-08-05T05:52:33.130-07:00Clip chartThere has been a lot of hype lately regarding the behavior clip chart. I have always liked the move up and down chart but was wondering if there was something to this hype. I have been reading blogs and articles and think there are some really valid points. <div><br></div><div>The arguments seem to all have the same overall idea of disliking it because of the emotional well being of a child. Some arguments include:</div><div>1- embarrassment of having to move their clip down.</div><div>2-children have a visual comparison of behavior.</div><div>3- ruining the day of a child by making them move their clip down.</div><div><br></div><div>I have gone back and forth all summer trying to decide- "What am I going to do? What is best for my students?"</div><div><br></div><div>I decided to keep doing what I've been doing for 5-6 years. The clip chart with multiple colors where you can move your clip up for positive behaviors and down when you make mistakes. In my opinion- first grade is a perfect time to teach the lesson- "we all make mistakes- the important part is to learn from them." I believe this system mirrors this thinking. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFWassDgEbIjvFBPA-SFIRc1QHMuZ1IcWyMAMhJ0dta2AL7XMG4DJfGm3xsPfBIE6aa9x9LMhRDzAFNdkf4Fv6wY7XktyulnlmTgNhGnEeAGDlKW2CHWwtws8ndYOlcU4ca6WymSBncwI/s640/blogger-image--1574109801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFWassDgEbIjvFBPA-SFIRc1QHMuZ1IcWyMAMhJ0dta2AL7XMG4DJfGm3xsPfBIE6aa9x9LMhRDzAFNdkf4Fv6wY7XktyulnlmTgNhGnEeAGDlKW2CHWwtws8ndYOlcU4ca6WymSBncwI/s640/blogger-image--1574109801.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>As I think about the articles and blog posts that I have read- I wonder if the clip chart systems that the articles mention are the "negative" color charts that only record and focus on downward movement. If they are- I personally have some of those same arguments listed above. However with the "new management" charts by Rick Norris (like I use)- I think that I disagree with some of the arguments. </div><div><br></div><div>The first argument is regarding embarrassment of moving your clip down. I NEVER yell at a child in front of the entire class to move down their clip. We always have a quiet discussion at my or their desk. Usually if there has been an issue- other students already have seen or heard the child do the action anyway. So the class already knows about it even before I interfere. I also only display the "positive" colors for students to see. I hide the "negative" colors behind my desk. Special cases there could be a child that is embarrassed of moving their clip down or even up. Those students always receive other management devices. How can I expect a child to learn if they don't feel safe and their emotional well being taken care of first? </div><div><br></div><div>The next argument about students comparing their behavior to peers... I don't know what to say about this one. I don't want to hurt their feelings. I do however try to have very specific criteria layed out for clip up and down moves so students know what I expect for either up or down move. (I have these signs on TPT.) I often will make "special" criteria for some s<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">tudents to make it more</span></div><div>achievable. I love the quote floating around- "Fair is what each person needs to be successful." That is completely true in a classroom. Like I mentioned above- if the chart doesn't work for some students- we find and use something that does. There is never a "one size fits all" in teaching! If there was- it sure would eliminate a lot of my planning time!</div><div><br></div><div>For the third argument regarding "ruining" their day- I model and share stories of mistakes that I have made. Usually the first 2-3 weeks of school it is tough on students if they have to move their clip down. However they soon "get" the mistakes idea and <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">only appear motivated to correct their mistake. Overall- I still think this is a very valuable lesson for students to learn. I don't want students full o</span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">f anxiety all day of worrying that that might move their clip down. I can't imagine coming to work with anxiety that the principal would catch me chatting with teachers during the work day. (Let's be real- sometimes a student does something amazing or says something hilarious and I just have to share!) However I am not on edge because 99% of the time I am following my plans and I know that my principal trusts me. I think that the system is teaching the students that I believe in them and know they can fix the mistake. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Upon reflecting after reading these articles- I decided to make a few changes. One change I made after reflecting was taking away the token economy associated with behavior. I now am making a giant economics unit where the students apply for classroom jobs and jobs earn different wages. Therefore students have to make a choice to apply for a job that they really like but may not pay as much or a job that pays more. </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Students have time sheets that are calculated every two weeks from our "accountants." Then students are paid once a month before the class store </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">from our "bank tellers." I also am </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">adding services that students can buy this year at the store. Including, "Personal day off of work." The money is now associated with their jobs (with a bonus structure too!) instead of behavior.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">(I need to "pretty" these job items up and then will post it to TPT in the next month.). I am really excited for this change.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Another change is how I am</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">now choosing to reward individual behaviors. For behavior I am now using the awesome classroom reward tickets. My friend saw them on Pinterest and made me copies. I need to find the original so I may give them credit!</span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKZNMF8gMpcRE5omHKLVRB-ljbWrgWPtBr5BitpL8UNvTrMSd_hfQMOsw71JI0tWXlQvCtKpW5wL0d6TdzOdBektnMHSYGVtRvT3ALNsi9Ro_MBCEnmJCnAhc9VGEMKFQvxzOTjNmlOHA/s640/blogger-image--2121661205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKZNMF8gMpcRE5omHKLVRB-ljbWrgWPtBr5BitpL8UNvTrMSd_hfQMOsw71JI0tWXlQvCtKpW5wL0d6TdzOdBektnMHSYGVtRvT3ALNsi9Ro_MBCEnmJCnAhc9VGEMKFQvxzOTjNmlOHA/s640/blogger-image--2121661205.jpg"></a></div><br></span></div><div>I leveled these cards by the more</div><div>desired rewards. Of course I jumped on that opportunity! I learned so much and stole many ideas.</div><div><br></div><div>One of the ideas comes from one of the most nurturing and sweet people that I have ever met. If I had a child going into kindergarten- I would beg for them to have her as their teacher. </div><div><br></div><div>She has purchased dollar store tubs (I purchased Big Lots since they are more sturdy) to organize her centers. Cutesy/ organizational genius/ room arrangement </div><div>2. Differentiation/ data/ scheduling/ computers/ technology</div><div>3. Then sometimes there are those teachers that are both!!!! I want to be them. (My husband- even though not a teacher definitely falls into this category.)</div><div><br></div><div>I totally fall in the second type of teacher category. I feel like I'm in a world of my own because my type typically seems to be teachers in older grades. I however teach delightful first grade students. </div><div><br></div><div>I've worked at two different schools. The same thing has happened at both- I look to the left and to the right and see adorable hallway decorations. As I sneak into their rooms I notice student work hanging, everything is color coordinated and has a place. </div><div><br></div><div>Then I go back to my room. I have what I. Consider "adorable" data tracking sheets, anchor charts, inspirational quotes. Some organization but definitely not the "cute" factor like all of my colleagues. :-(</div><div><br></div><div>Believe me- I have tried for 8 years. I can imagine it in my head- but I hardly ever can make it happen. Most times it takes me days to make something that will take those type 1 teachers an hour.</div><div><br></div><div>I always try to remember this when I teach students. I always share my story too. I love art- but it doesn't come easy and I have to work really hard to be able to do it. Then I tell them about two of my siblings that can free draw about anything! </div><div><br></div><div>Back to my "aha" point of teacher bartering. </div><div><br></div><div>So- many of my friends are the total opposite of me. So- I started teacher bartering this summer. :-)</div><div><br></div><div>Make daily 5 signs, customized word wall labels in exchange for a friend painting me inspirational paintings to hang in my classroom. </div><div><br></div><div>Make differentiated kindergarten centers in exchange for them organizing my room! </div><div><br></div><div>Make word work centers in exchange for an awesome Pinterest chevron cork board. <div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">I'm working on things across the board. Today I thought that I would post about math. :-)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">I teach math using a guided math format. You can download free charts and read more about it <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Guided-Math-Rotation-Charts-818614" target="_blank">here</a>.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">I have been working on differentiated skill based centers and still need a couple of weeks to finish for these.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">I also am finishing my numbers and measurement unit to complete the units used for teaching math during the first quarter.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">I have finished my take on an interactive notebook. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Quarter-1-First-Grade-Interactive-Math-Notebook-Journal-1320550" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBx36nRPPhyePGqLl6w-RQbzT9bDmz7SFHMNhBKQywt1wKtDTxdvEM0VlAuqF6rNqLreTcmLJp0jog2TszaKuS-nPIvZF_sscih_npHhT0NMKRm7xSbtPY4wILtPhGaYsMo4WpMpcS3Dw/s1600/interactive+cover+page.jpg" height="400" width="333" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: purple; font-size: large;">My reasoning for making a different notebook when there are already AWESOME notebooks out there is so that students can use their notebooks to practice their skills during independent work or with a volunteer. Most of the things involve tape so you can use a dry erase marker or pockets to sort cards. If you click </span><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Quarter-1-First-Grade-Interactive-Math-Notebook-Journal-1320550" style="font-size: x-large;" target="_blank">here</a><span style="background-color: white; color: purple; font-size: large;">, you can download the preview to see the sample. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: purple; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw0UKp5gET-jnhGI22DjT-VQBy-V49FwA62GgqW0Gp3tCfPLW2j6L1Nl6NE6IkftRBK5s0F5NsqfZbXFWWeQbttDCRHXh1X0v8iXZ9TmEAqLeP0N77jHm4gZJi_xiNEOi2_Tw0TOUJvAk/s1600/interactive+page+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw0UKp5gET-jnhGI22DjT-VQBy-V49FwA62GgqW0Gp3tCfPLW2j6L1Nl6NE6IkftRBK5s0F5NsqfZbXFWWeQbttDCRHXh1X0v8iXZ9TmEAqLeP0N77jHm4gZJi_xiNEOi2_Tw0TOUJvAk/s1600/interactive+page+1.jpg" height="400" width="339" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: purple;"> Each skill has an "I Can" statement, a Monday sort, and a self reflection rubric.</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large; text-align: start;"><span style="color: purple;"> I also start out each week with a blind sort. The students have to work together to figure out how to sort the cards. The cards will lead to the topic that we will be learning for the week. Students have to reflect daily on how well they followed rules and how much they learned each day. At the end of math we have a "reflection" time where students share what they are proud of (sometimes I tell them what to bring as a quick spontaneous check) and they also discuss how they did on goals and reflect on their chart.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: purple;"><br /></span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmMiWH-w0M1h54wnGmU3u1-FX-lxP7j3_xTuqdYjGZOwCYPb5FIg8Gpe5IGLLbQi1rwYbdilKqDH6cp3ecbKiEhdeGQqDvjVVnkQ0fd5dYFUOjYvtKgh0w9ref5sU58nihhYlrxh0NImU/s1600/interactive+page+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmMiWH-w0M1h54wnGmU3u1-FX-lxP7j3_xTuqdYjGZOwCYPb5FIg8Gpe5IGLLbQi1rwYbdilKqDH6cp3ecbKiEhdeGQqDvjVVnkQ0fd5dYFUOjYvtKgh0w9ref5sU58nihhYlrxh0NImU/s1600/interactive+page+3.jpg" height="400" width="358" /></a></div>
<b style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: purple;"> Each skill has a vocabulary page.</span></b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large; text-align: start;"><span style="color: purple;"> Students will draw or write a way for them to remember the vocabulary word and this sheet gets glued right into their notebook. I always use these vocabulary words as I teach but always had a tough time keeping up with a math word wall- so this is my hopefully simple solution! </span></span></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwDCYVNSLMi-iWgzsUSsA0OZJCOiKqw2aJCdkB6g38rh8q1RPvrJreZCPfjWIDViTT8PF2TY0O-OPJxWnz14XnQwiek_RW55f1gSTVvJreijiIKPbPAZtBboa3RMkizTyRbt2HJ0YCNbY/s1600/interactive+page+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwDCYVNSLMi-iWgzsUSsA0OZJCOiKqw2aJCdkB6g38rh8q1RPvrJreZCPfjWIDViTT8PF2TY0O-OPJxWnz14XnQwiek_RW55f1gSTVvJreijiIKPbPAZtBboa3RMkizTyRbt2HJ0YCNbY/s1600/interactive+page+4.jpg" height="210" width="400" /></a></div>
<b style="background-color: white; text-align: center;"><span style="color: purple;">Each skill has an "interactive" component.</span></b><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large; text-align: start;"><span style="color: purple;">For this particular skill, students cut out and glue the number chart into their notebook. Then they cut out and keep the small pieces in a pocket in the notebook. This way they can complete the puzzle multiple times. The second sheet is covered with packing tape or a small piece of page protector is taped over it so that students can use a dry erase marker to trace over it.</span></span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: large;">The next item that I finished is by far my favorite!</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: large;"><span style="color: #cc0000;">The thing that I am the most excited about comes from an inspiration from the AMAZING Dave Burgess- author of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Like-Pirate-Engagement-Creativity/dp/0988217600/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405269811&sr=8-1&keywords=teach+like+a+pirate" target="_blank">Teach like a Pirate</a>. (If you haven't read his book- seriously stop what you are doing right now and go read it!!!). You can read about my obsession with <a href="http://www.lasotaslittlelearners.blogspot.com/2014/03/a-must-read-you-will-not-regret-it.html" target="_blank">this blog post.</a></span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><br /></span>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: red; font-size: large;">Well I have been thinking- "how do I make math more engaging? What can we do to make math exciting enough that my students want to come to school even if they are sick?"</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: red; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: red; font-size: large;">Then I had an AHA moment as I was doing <strike>charity work</strike>- lol- okay I was being lazy and watching Lifetime. I thought about creating math challenges using the skills that they are learning.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2iRh-RdOd3VkGjQOtgz0CzH8SV0nIg4RA9wP4CTZNlYPw9WGzP018y6g0cKeLNuWG1Iv43AFhgFhjLOsW0fwYUn8bFY4Zwku7vpsPTuln02urtBRZK3o9Lagi0gjJgvzNCAHwMl_o1d0/s1600/challenge+sample+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2iRh-RdOd3VkGjQOtgz0CzH8SV0nIg4RA9wP4CTZNlYPw9WGzP018y6g0cKeLNuWG1Iv43AFhgFhjLOsW0fwYUn8bFY4Zwku7vpsPTuln02urtBRZK3o9Lagi0gjJgvzNCAHwMl_o1d0/s1600/challenge+sample+2.jpg" height="400" width="333" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">I have been making every other week mystery math challenges. </span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">It all starts with a plain box and wrapping it up to make it look cute (I did my best- I'm sure ALL of you can make it look even better!)</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">Then I filled the box with some left over confetti like bag filler. The weekly challenge (which is determined by skills that have already been introduced) is "hidden" in the box.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">I press "play" on this fantastic song:</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4&feature=kp" target="_blank">EYE OF THE TIGER</a></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Then DRAMATICALLY have the students do stretches/ exercises to "warm-up" and finally pull out the challenge from the box. (The warm-up cards are in the purple below.)</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvaRWpPe2jpXtVP7s1xkUWuOj6joJGooS13SGrl54TzcBXVBPMpc9grp1i-sGKueb_Y1Xzeo0e_MDfcCx3L87Pr3YQG38gNkwuHJ9YFTfLOCn-1_zVEBJ2vwBGH8gWjn_-ut7clCq2sY/s1600/challenge3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLvaRWpPe2jpXtVP7s1xkUWuOj6joJGooS13SGrl54TzcBXVBPMpc9grp1i-sGKueb_Y1Xzeo0e_MDfcCx3L87Pr3YQG38gNkwuHJ9YFTfLOCn-1_zVEBJ2vwBGH8gWjn_-ut7clCq2sY/s1600/challenge3.jpg" height="173" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Then we discuss the challenge, determine if it should be individual, partners or a group challenge and they all have to fill out the "planning sheet."</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc37wnhYL6yXkjXxm7pG7fVPzwbb5-8NI34bab3MVzy4-XwfGB3ece79xHWtz5iP03wxWzuaoedYPjuvySrLpQ5uot7J0nyWgdW1ZIbNieVJmCfn1ZvUWdyqJ51YyBbH0WoKkqzBuyc_w/s1600/planning+sheet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc37wnhYL6yXkjXxm7pG7fVPzwbb5-8NI34bab3MVzy4-XwfGB3ece79xHWtz5iP03wxWzuaoedYPjuvySrLpQ5uot7J0nyWgdW1ZIbNieVJmCfn1ZvUWdyqJ51YyBbH0WoKkqzBuyc_w/s1600/planning+sheet.jpg" height="238" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;"> </span><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Then we discuss the challenge, determine if it should be individual, partners, or groups. I have included "idea" sheets for each challenge but I want to get the input from the students so that they are directly involved in the planning to make the challenge.</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-o1EQJRXIHOVO5E65Wx_HVdR_FVjJzWIFFnTojZelcmc3yITmxgZ-n0XebW-F0xLhabI7TUa1fFLHJgOOzrHnInHZ8X305UroIQkfMM39X-NRghGx_aQ5aJ5ayZbkJNsI2OrL8TQhqeQ/s1600/persuasive+commercials.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-o1EQJRXIHOVO5E65Wx_HVdR_FVjJzWIFFnTojZelcmc3yITmxgZ-n0XebW-F0xLhabI7TUa1fFLHJgOOzrHnInHZ8X305UroIQkfMM39X-NRghGx_aQ5aJ5ayZbkJNsI2OrL8TQhqeQ/s1600/persuasive+commercials.jpg" height="268" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was completely hands off for this project and what my first grade students developed is amazing! <br />
<br />
We started out by reading the book, Have I Got a Book for You.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Have-I-Got-Book-You/dp/1554534836/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397609048&sr=8-1&keywords=have+i+got+a+book+for+you" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.amazon.com/Have-I-Got-Book-You/dp/1554534836/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397609048&sr=8-1&keywords=have+i+got+a+book+for+you" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlKEn2u1qPA-XSzBjohpLaX5-PNrM1efQbnOjXfqVDnz7O9mx59GHxhkxY3ohkKAJGHqJ74ZVxxm_92uqmf0czRSklXlbWiGKiRGk2fevkD9H9IaPlBWj_9p38EfPfrn4ewIVBxNdl6Ik/s1600/have+i+got+the+book+for+you.jpg" height="320" width="270" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This book is about the character trying to sell the reader the book. He tries almost every sales technique possible to sell the book. My students love this book! It is a little over their heads at points but they still enjoy listening to it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then we watched some persuasive commercials. THANKS to the Blendspace user that created these! I simply copied their "plans." </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://blnds.co/1dQoO5f">http://blnds.co/1dQoO5f</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
SIDE NOTE: If you haven't jumped on the Blendspace wagon yet- do it! :) It is super easy to use and organize online materials for lessons. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After that, the students formed groups based on similar interests. Some wanted to make a "Save the Animals" commercial, while others wanted to persuade others to play Minecraft, buy a certain video game etc.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I gave the students blank script writing paper (coming soon in a TPT product.) and set them loose! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After about 2 days the students came to the carpet for a lesson on fluency expression. Students were set loose again to work on their expression. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, students worked on props to hold. They also came up to me and we searched Google images to find a "setting" for their movie. We took a screen shot and made a jpeg image with their setting. Some students at this point decided on asking an "actor" to help them out by being a satisfied customer etc. They were super creative! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally, we discussed movements and how people can read body language to infer. Students practiced their expression and also their movements.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finally taping day arrive about 6 days after they received their blank script paperwork. I bought wrinkle resistant green fabric. Enlisted the help of some "prop" helpers to hold the fabric. (Later I will attach Velcro!) Then we taped in front of the green screen to create our commercials. I learned the hard way to keep some "prop" clothing on hand too. If the students had on a green shirt they became a floating head of arms! It became a great learning experience because students said, "Maybe that is how they make the ghosts on real movies!"</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGNM2E0xlCSF3XB2ngJv8v8GoZ2xxi49LwmZsMoYR-XjjA1bNi9DLO4OWte-v-ePQDVkaZu6s21H05uhSyWjIuLlLAjjbVWirSiETx56HcAAllr339cytSQrqV25QD2vEsShW-sZeQclc/s1600/green+screen+covered.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGNM2E0xlCSF3XB2ngJv8v8GoZ2xxi49LwmZsMoYR-XjjA1bNi9DLO4OWte-v-ePQDVkaZu6s21H05uhSyWjIuLlLAjjbVWirSiETx56HcAAllr339cytSQrqV25QD2vEsShW-sZeQclc/s1600/green+screen+covered.jpg" height="301" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Using iMovie you are able to insert the setting image and the video to make a real looking commercial. <br />
<br />
I shared all of the videos with parents using one of my new favorite tools, Dropbox. Parents could view the videos by the link that I provided. The link is not searchable therefore I didn't need to worry about privacy issues. :)<br />
<br />
I LOVE my techy friend that inspires me to do more each day! Hopefully this activity inspired my kids to write more. :)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4075727928396651885.post-30163060985936682842014-03-31T19:35:00.001-07:002014-03-31T19:35:51.692-07:00Please please please take a minute to help my wonderful friends!!!One of my dearest friends Stefanie and her husband Ryan are trying to adopt. I cannot wait for the day when they finally get their own little buddle of joy. That child will be one of the luckiest kids. <div><br></div><div>I work with Stefanie and within a month of meeting her- we instantly became great friends. That is just who Stefanie and Ryan are- very social and easy to love people. Not only do they instantly become friends with everyone that they meet- but they also have such a loving relationship as a couple. They are the couple that you just want to "hate" with envy but you can't because they are just genuinely loving and hilarious people. </div><div><br></div><div>So I ask this of you- please take the 1 minute to like or better yet share their adoption Facebook page with others. Not only will it fullfill your "good deed of the day". But you will help in connecting these amazing people with their future son or daughter. </div><div><br></div><div>Thank you so much!!!!!</div><div><br></div><div>Hugs for your help,</div><div>Danielle</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><a href="https://www.facebook.com/ryanandstefaniewanttoadopt">https://www.facebook.com/ryanandstefaniewanttoadopt</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8_VnPCruyilfssD9V2ToIXU41nH6EZE_-l9IpVkyVzAaR925nSD3IG5jL_Cz1SUoIOLfX1SaS0kPGkkJPNBgWycJD2qbxx-i_TPlepRirzjSeu3GvYn4VCYvS47Lm9gkVN72a01ZMx9s/s640/blogger-image-1980299840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8_VnPCruyilfssD9V2ToIXU41nH6EZE_-l9IpVkyVzAaR925nSD3IG5jL_Cz1SUoIOLfX1SaS0kPGkkJPNBgWycJD2qbxx-i_TPlepRirzjSeu3GvYn4VCYvS47Lm9gkVN72a01ZMx9s/s640/blogger-image-1980299840.jpg"></a></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00321180859989609714noreply@blogger.com0
